The video you can watch above, is of myself and swimmer Masai Zebechaka. It was taken last year after Masai won his first gold medal in the pool, in the 50m Butterfly at an international swimming event in London 2016. It was a great moment for me to reflect on the hard work we had done to get to that point, and the many ways Sports Chiropractic can help an athlete.
How can Sports Chiropractic help?
Sports Chiropractic involves helping Athlete’s find that extra few percent in their performance. A fully functioning spine can improve mobility, flexibility and stability. These areas are key in any sport, but especially in swimming. For example, the ability to arch your Thoracic spine, or mid back, can help improve your position underwater. Better shoulder stability might allow greater power in your stroke, as your muscles can contract harder. Thus, a better function spine and body equals better performance.
Sports Chiropractic is a natural approach to performance enhancement
We also know that approaching the body as a whole, is very important. A problem with your ankle, might be contributing to a problem in your shoulder, or vice versa. Sports Chiropractic looks at the body like one linking chain, where a break in one link, can cause problems further up or down. Therefore a Sports Chiropractor looks to correct the underlying cause, not just the symptom.
Tell someone you know who wants to get more out of their training
Sometimes winning a race comes down to the finest of margins, a millisecond, or that little bit extra that can make all the difference. If you know an athlete looking to get that extra edge, encourage them to try Chiropractic. A Chiropractor will fit into their health team, and work along side their Physio, sports doctor or trainer. The more members on the athletes team, the better the results.
