Opioid Medication – Why you should avoid them!
Got lower or upper back pain? Think twice and then think again before taking any opioid-based painkillers!
A recent study found opioids were no better than ibuprofen or paracetamol at reducing lower back pain over a 12-month period, yet these opioids came with the threat of dependence and addiction, which has been blamed for an increase in accidental overdoses.
The slippery slope to addiction
Nearly 100 people die per day in the US from opioid addiction. And the president of the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation, said Australia’s problem with opioids was “going down the same route”.
Australia ranks eighth among the world’s top 30 users of prescription opiates.
Opioid’s come with different names
Example brands: Oxycontin, Endone and Targin
What are my other options?
Low back pain is more easily assessed and treated when in the acute phase, which means seeing a professional early on. Often we might hope the pain will just go away, but this may lead to longer lasting symptoms becoming chronic. Chronic conditions are often more complex, and involve the brain becoming over-sensitive to pain and stimulation
Chiropractic, movement based exercises and education (learning more about your back/spine) can all play important roles in your recovery, and are shown to be a great first line of care. And, there are none of the nasty addiction issues you may face with opioid use. You can watch a video we made on helping your low back pain here.
